Dog walkers beware!! There is a poop thief on the loose. And speaking of feces (not for those with weak stomachs). I know....it's not quite my flavor (no pun intended), but that's what I get for reading Dave Barry's blog.

In case you wonder what I've been up to:

Oligodendrocytes form the myelin around neuronal axons, which is responsible for the rapid conduction of electrical impulses. Microscopically, their nucleus is visible but the cell body is not by H&E stain. Demyelinating diseases are characterized by a loss of myelin without causing damage to the neuron (causing the impulse conduction to slow). The most common demyelinating disease is multiple sclerosis.

Now, unless you are Owen, forgive my lack of posting (only cause Owen probably already knew that).

My dad was quoted in the Arizona Republic today. It's not everyday the news finds something nice to say about the prison system. Congrats dad.

Mr. Prez in town!!

Mindy went on a walk today - she was walking down the path by our apt, looked onto Golf Links (which borders the air force base) and saw a whole stream of police motorcycles and collection of limos. She though, "Oh, look, a funeral procession".

Fast forward 6 hours, she sees on the news that Bush was in town and puts two & two together.

"I wondered where the hearse was." I sure do love my wife.

It's been a while

I'm back. I went to Phoenix in Thursday. It was a busy weekend. Mindy's mom's birthday, my granddad's birthday and mom & Jerry's anniversary were all on Sunday. On top of that, my b-day is on Tuesday. This leads to a lot of driving around, and not much time for posting.

I got an iPod Shuffle from mom & Jerry. I know some of my readers were less than happy with them, but I must say I'm impressed. Compared to the mp3 player I was using, the shuffle holds 15x more songs, has 3x the battery (which no longer need to be replaced), and is 1/2 the size. I think the cheaper line of Apple products was a great idea. Props to Apple (and mom & Jerry for the excellent present)!!!

Josh sent me this article. I don't know why, but I think it may be the coolest thing I've read all week. It's just a happy story. Most "news" would continue to say the parents were suing someone. Instead:

I had a burger with cheese, bacon, egg and ham," she said Wednesday, relishing the moment like a kid in a candy store. "And some hash browns with grease."

But after being on normal food for more than a week, ice cream is the flavor of the month.

"She tried it at Sizzler," said her mom, Amelia. "She liked it."

She likes ice cream. Need I say more...

My Thoughts...

Basically, this is how our proposal went down (and it pretty much sums up my thoughts on SC research):

1) Adult stem cells - human life is not at stake, therefore morality is not an issue.

2) Embryonic stem cells - We propsed that embryos from fertility clinics could be used for stem cell research because they are already slated to be destoryed. Owen put it well, "it's like using a cadaver to train medical students." Our thought was you could regulate cell lines, and update the list of acceptable lines every few years to ensure that those used were collected for the purpose of reproduction.

Then, to extend Owen's analogy, you don't kill a man to study anatomy - one shouldn't kill a perfectly good embryo to perform research. Therefore, we were against collecting embryos for the purpose of stem cell research.

Wish list!!

In case you've been living in a cave for the last 22 (almost 23) years, my birthday is coming up. Usually my parents have to pull teeth to find out what I want (what can I say...I'm a content man). This year is a bit different so, since I'm 99% sure that all of my parents read my blog, I figure I'll post what I want:

1) iPod shuffle - it's cheaper than an iPod!!!
2) Digital Camera - What better way to keep up on the progress of your grandchild than the ease of plugging in and e-mailing (or posting) pictures??
3) Rain/Summer gear for my motorcycle - You want me to be safe don't you?

Keep posting on the stem cell comments. My presentation is done, and my arguments are finished, but I still wanna hear what you have to say.

Ethics

In my Ethics class on Wed, I was assigned to give a debate type speech on why stem cell research should not take place. I'm looking for a little inspiration, so I'm interested:

Do you think stem cell research should happen, and why?

I don't want some flame war, so don't start a fight. I just want to know your opinion...
